Palliative care is focused on improving quality of life and easing illness burden in those facing serious illness. This includes management of distressing symptoms such as cancer-related pain, nausea, and/or uncontrolled shortness of breath.
Palliative care is not limited to cancer diagnoses, and many people with other conditions such as advanced COPD, dementia, advanced liver, CHF or kidney disease may benefit. In addition to symptom management, Palliative care also helps to facilitate conversation about overall goals of care, assistance with completing advanced directives such as POLST (DNR) forms, discussion about appointing a health care POA as well as discussing options when faced with complex-medical decisions.
